Trifecta!, a woodwind trio consisting of music faculty from the Morehead State University School of Music and Theater will perform on Thursday, November 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ohio University Southern Collins Center Bowman Auditorium. This is the opening performance of the Ohio University Southern 2015-2016 Community Concert Series. Admission is free.
Trifecta! is a trio consisting of Lori Baruth, clarinet, David Oyen, bassoon, and Chialing Hsieh, piano. They have performed together for several years and have a wide array of new and old works in their repertoire. Strong advocates of new music, they have commissioned several composers to grow the available works for this instrumentation. New commissions by Mark Zanter, Christopher Weait, and Michael Young can be heard on their debut album, Trifecta! which was released in Spring 2015. Trifecta! has performed at the Kentucky Music Educator’s Association’s annual conference in 2015, the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest 2014, Kentucky Music Teacher’s Association’s annual conference in 2013, the New Music Festival at Marshall University in 2013, and has been invited to perform at the KMTA conference in October 2015 and the Society of Composers, Inc. Region III Conference in 2016.
Lori Baruth is Associate Professor of Clarinet at Morehead State University, where she joined the faculty in 2007. She received her DMA degree from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati (2010), and MM (2004), BM (1999), and BME (1999) degrees from The Ohio State University. Dr. Baruth has performed as principal clarinet with the Huntington, Westerville, Cave Run, and Central Ohio Symphony Orchestras, Heisey Wind Ensemble, and Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca Orchestra (Italy). She taught at the 2011 Festival Nacional de Música at the Escola de Música e Artes Cênicas da UFG in Goiañia, Brazil. She has performed in the Marshall University New Music Festival, Grandin Vocal Chamber Music Festival, and the MusicX Contemporary Music Festival. In 2012, she was a finalist in the ICA’s Research Competition and her doctoral research was published in The Clarinet, the professional journal of the International Clarinet Association, in March 2014. She is a co-founder of Trifecta! and also performs with the Baird Winds and Movére woodwind quintets.
David Oyen is Professor of Bassoon and Music Theory at Morehead State University. He holds a B.M. degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, an Orchestral Music Diploma from the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Karlsruhe, Germany; and the M.M and D.M.A degrees in Bassoon Performance from The Ohio State University. He was principal bassoonist of the Springfield (OH) Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Columbus (OH) Symphony Orchestra, the Roanoke Symphony. the Lexington Philharmonic, the West Virginia Symphony, the Kentucky Center Chamber Players, the Movére Wind Quintet, the Seneca Chamber Orchestra, and the Baird Winds. Dr. Oyen has also performed at several International Double Reed Society Conferences. Dr. Oyen is currently Immediate Past President of the Kentucky Music Teachers Association (KMTA). In addition to his teaching duties at Morehead State, Dr. Oyen has served on the faculty of Lutheran Summer Music since 1997.
Chialing Hsieh is Instructor of Music at Morehead State University in Kentucky where she also directs the piano accompanying program, and she also serves on the faculty of Lutheran Summer Music Academy. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the National Taipei University of the Arts, and M.M. and D.M.A. in piano performance at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. She is an active solo and collaborative pianist with a large repertoire of both standard and lesser-known works from the Baroque to the present. She was a winner in the First Youth Piano Competition in Taiwan and was selected to perform the opening recital of the “Rising Star” concert series in Taipei. She has been a featured pianist on six CD’s for the Centaur, Innova, and Ballpark record labels.
Chialing performs at a variety of regional and national conferences and accompanies at several competitions in the United States—including the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition, the District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, College Music Society Conferences, National Flute Society Conferences, International Clarinet Association Conference, MTNA Conferences, and the Northern American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference. In 2013, she hosted the Southeastern Composers League Forum and drew nearly 100 participants.
